Grand Theft Auto VI uses Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, or RAGE. It is the same engine that powered Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and GTA Online. Rockstar has not released a separate engine name for GTA 6, and no official technical breakdown exists yet.
RAGE has been iterated on since 2006, with each release adding new physics, rendering, and streaming tech. For GTA 6, the studio is expected to push the engine harder, particularly for the game’s large map, dynamic weather, and character animations. The game’s first trailer and the August 27, 2026 Extended Look show significant visual improvements over GTA V, but exact engine specs are unannounced.
One thing to keep in mind: the engine itself is not a selling point Rockstar discusses openly. The announcement materials only mention platforms and features. If you are curious about modding support, that is a separate question. Rockstar acquired the FiveM team in 2023, but no GTA 6 mod tools have been confirmed.
