What you actually pay for GTA 6

There are exactly two ways to buy Grand Theft Auto VI, and both of them are downloads. Standard costs $79.99 and gives you the game. Ultimate costs $99.99 and adds the extra digital content Rockstar packed into the bigger box. Nothing else exists: no Deluxe, no Special, no Collector's Edition, no steelbook on a shelf. If a shop is advertising one of those, it is inventing it.

How much is GTA 6 in your region

The $79.99 and $99.99 figures are the American ones. Sony and Microsoft set local prices per store, and they do not simply convert dollars: taxes, currency and regional pricing rules all move the number. The only price that matters to you is the one your own store page shows once you are signed in with your usual account. Screenshots of other regions are entertainment, not a quote.

The same goes for the figures that circulated before pre-orders opened. Plenty of them turned out to be close, but a store page in a browser tab beats any of them, and it takes ten seconds to check.

Why GTA 6 costs $79.99

Rockstar has never explained the price publicly, so anyone telling you the reasoning is guessing. What can be observed is the shape of the market around it. Console games sat at $59.99 for two console generations. Several publishers moved their headline releases to $69.99 after 2020, then a handful pushed to $79.99 in 2025 and 2026. GTA 6 launched at the top of that range, and it is the first Grand Theft Auto to go past sixty dollars at all.

Put the history next to inflation and the jump looks smaller than the headlines suggest. GTA 5 shipped in 2013 at $59.99 and stayed there through a decade of re-releases on three console generations. Eighty dollars in 2026 buys roughly what sixty did back then. That is context, not a defence of the price: whether a game is worth $79.99 is your call, and there is no shame in waiting for a sale.

Standard or Ultimate: is the extra $20 worth it

The gap between the editions is twenty dollars, which is a quarter of the base price. Both editions contain the same game, the same story and the same map. Ultimate adds digital extras on top.

  • Buy Standard if you want the game and nothing else. You still get the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus if you order before November 20.
  • Buy Ultimate only after reading the item list on your own store page. Bonus content is the part that varies most between stores and regions, so the page in front of you is the source, not a fan wiki.
  • Upgrading later is not something Rockstar has committed to. If an upgrade path matters to you, assume it does not exist and decide once.

How much did GTA 6 cost to make

This is the other half of the search traffic, and the honest answer is short: nobody outside Take-Two knows. The company has never broken out a budget for a single game in its earnings reports, and Rockstar does not discuss production costs. The billion-dollar and two-billion-dollar figures that get quoted are estimates built by analysts and journalists from headcount, development years and marketing spend. They are guesses with good sourcing, not accounting.

The same applies to revenue. Take-Two has not published pre-order counts or launch sales, so any chart claiming to show how much GTA 6 has made so far is modelling, not reporting. When real numbers land in a quarterly report, they will land on our news page the same day.

What the price does not include

Two things worth budgeting for beyond the sticker. The first is storage: the game is a download, and Rockstar has not announced the install size, so the widely repeated 150 GB figure is a community estimate. Clear the space before launch night rather than during it. The second is a subscription, if you play online with other people at all: an online mode for GTA 6 has not been announced, but PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass Core are separate purchases whenever they do become relevant.

PC players have nothing to budget yet. A PC version has not been announced and has no date, which also means there are no official system requirements and no PC price. Everything known about that situation is on our GTA 6 PC page.

GTA 6 price FAQ

Quick answers

The Standard Edition is $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition is $99.99 in the United States. Both are digital, and both prices come from the official PlayStation and Xbox store pages rather than a leak.

Yes for the US. The $79.99 and $99.99 figures have been on the live store pages since pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026. Prices in other currencies are set per region and per store, so check the page in your own account.

A pre-order costs the same as the game: $79.99 for Standard, $99.99 for Ultimate. There is no cheaper deposit option and no separate pre-order fee.

Rockstar has never given a public reason. What is visible is the trend: big publishers moved several 2023 to 2026 releases to the $69.99 and $79.99 tiers, and GTA 6 launched at the higher one.

No. GTA 6 is a digital release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so there is no boxed copy to buy at retail.

Take-Two has never published a development budget. The billion-dollar figures you see quoted are analyst estimates and press reporting, not company numbers.
