GTA 6 Leaks: What Leaked, and What Turned Out to Be True
The GTA 6 leak story starts with one real event, the September 2022 theft of early development footage from Rockstar, and continues as a long tail of claims that were never verified. This page sorts them. Every line below is marked as confirmed by Rockstar, reported by press or rumour, and nothing here links to the leaked material itself.

01
A break-in at Rockstar becomes public
September 18, 2022Reported by press
A large batch of early development footage from an unfinished build appeared on a fan forum overnight and spread across social networks within hours. Press coverage that weekend put the count at roughly ninety short clips.
02
Rockstar confirms the intrusion
September 19, 2022Confirmed by Rockstar
Rockstar published a short statement on its Newswire: it had suffered a network intrusion, early development footage had been taken, and the studio did not expect a long term effect on development. That remains the only official account.
03
What the footage actually was
September 2022Reported by press
Reporting at the time described test scenes from an early build: grey untextured buildings, placeholder animation, debug overlays and developer camera tools. Nothing in it resembled a finished game.
04
Two leads and a Florida setting
September 2022Reported by press
The clips showed a male and a female character working together, and street signage that looked like Florida. Rockstar said nothing about either detail, so this stayed an unconfirmed reading of stolen footage for over a year.
05
The first trailer settles it
December 4, 2023Confirmed by Rockstar
Trailer 1 confirmed Vice City, the state of Leonida and Lucia as a lead. The parts of the 2022 reading that matched were the broad ones: the place, and the pair of protagonists.
06
A court names the person responsible
2023Reported by press
A London court heard the case of Arion Kurtaj, a teenage member of the Lapsus$ group, over the Rockstar intrusion and other attacks. He was found responsible in August 2023 and sentenced that December to an indefinite hospital order.
Who leaked GTA 6?
The person behind the 2022 theft was identified through a criminal trial in the United Kingdom, not through a Rockstar announcement. Court reporting named Arion Kurtaj, then a teenager and a member of the Lapsus$ group, already linked to intrusions at several large technology companies. He was found responsible in August 2023 and sentenced that December to an indefinite hospital order.
Rockstar has never commented on the individual. Its only public words on the affair remain the Newswire statement of September 19, 2022, and Take-Two later described the incident in filings without naming anyone. No other person has ever been officially connected to a Rockstar breach involving this game.
GTA 6 leaks after 2022
Nothing on the scale of 2022 has happened since. What circulates now falls into four groups, and telling them apart is most of the work.
Reported by press
Store listings that arrived early
Store pages have repeatedly shown prices, dates or edition names shortly before Rockstar published them. These usually turn out genuine, because they come from a real commercial system, but they stay unofficial until the Newswire post lands.
Rumour
Insider posts and predictions
A small group of journalists and accounts publish claims about dates, features and marketing beats. Some have a good record, but a record is not a source, and none of it is endorsed by Rockstar.
Rumour
GTA 6 gameplay leak claims
Searches for a GTA 6 gameplay leak mostly return re-uploads of the 2022 build, mislabelled clips from other games or edited fan footage. There has been no second theft. The only real gameplay footage is the official video from August 2026.
Rumour
GTA 6 map leak claims
Detailed coloured maps of Leonida circulate constantly. They are community reconstructions drawn from trailers and screenshots, and some are careful work. None is official: Rockstar has never released a map or an area figure.

Why the 2022 footage explains so little about the finished game
Development builds are working tools: rough geometry, placeholder audio, test animation and features that exist only so a designer can check a system. Years passed between that build and release, and half of what people described as a feature was a debug menu. The broad reading did survive, since Vice City, Florida and a pair of leads all appear in the finished marketing, but that was also the least detailed claim anyone made. Everything narrower was wrong often enough to be useless as a guide.
How this site handles GTA 6 leaks
Four rules, applied to every page here:
No stolen material. We do not host, embed, mirror or link to the 2022 footage, to re-uploads of it, or to any leaked build or asset.
Labels on everything. A claim is confirmed, reported or rumour. If it cannot be labelled, it does not go on the page.
Official sources first. Newswire, the official game pages and the store listings outrank every other source, including our own earlier reporting.
Corrections stay visible. A settled rumour is updated in place rather than quietly deleted.
If you want the confirmed version of the game instead of the leaked one, three pages cover it: the release date page with the full delay history, the trailers page with all three official videos, and the platforms page for what the game actually runs on. Pricing sits on the price page, the two editions are compared on the pre-order page, and the open questions are collected in our answers hub.
