Yes. Rockstar has presented Lucia and Jason as the two characters you play, not as one lead and one companion. That much is clear from how both have been shown.
The part that is not explained
How you move between them. GTA V used a free switch - a wheel you could pull up in open world, with a short cinematic transition and each character carrying on with his own life in your absence. Whether GTA 6 uses the same system, a restricted version of it, or story-driven switching at fixed points has not been described by Rockstar.
This matters more than it sounds. Free switching shaped how GTA V structured missions, side content and even its heists. A different approach would produce a different-feeling game.
Two characters, one relationship
The structural difference from GTA V is that Lucia and Jason are a couple rather than three men who work together occasionally. A dual-protagonist design built around a relationship has more reason to keep them in the same scene, which may mean fewer moments of genuine separation than GTA V offered.
Claims worth treating carefully
- Co-op or two-player missions. Nothing has been announced, and the game is launching as a single-player title.
- Independent skill trees, separate progression or per-character properties. Unmentioned in any official material.
- Choosing which character to play at the start. No such option has been described.
Where the answer will come from
The August 2026 extended gameplay video was the first substantial look at how the game plays, and future videos are the likeliest place for switching to be shown. All official footage is indexed on our trailers page, and new details are logged in the news feed.
