Grand Theft Auto VI is based on Vice City, Rockstar’s long-running fictional stand-in for Miami, Florida. The game’s map is part of the fictional state of Leonida, which mirrors Florida, and the story is set in and around the Vice-Dale Beach area, a direct homage to Miami’s South Beach.
This is the first time Vice City appears as a fully modern, open-world setting since GTA: Vice City in 2002, but the 2026 version is much larger and more detailed. Rockstar’s extended look in August 2026 showed the city’s neon-soaked oceanfront, suburban sprawl, and swampy interiors, all modeled on real South Florida landmarks like the MacArthur Causeway and the Everglades.
Miami itself is never named in the game, and the map size in square kilometers has not been officially confirmed. What is confirmed is that the playable area extends beyond the city into rural Leonida, which is expected to include smaller towns and natural terrain based on the state’s geography.
Is it just Miami?
No. The game’s world is reported to include multiple distinct regions across Leonida, but Vice City is the primary urban center and the setting that the marketing has focused on.
