What is the age rating for GTA 6?

Short answer

Expect Mature 17+ from the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe. Every mainline Grand Theft Auto has carried those ratings, and nothing about GTA 6 suggests a change.

Updated Gameplay

Every mainline Grand Theft Auto since the ESRB started rating them has landed at Mature 17+, and every one has taken PEGI 18 in Europe. There is no version of GTA 6 that comes in lower.

When the official rating appears

Ratings boards publish their summaries in the weeks before release, usually alongside store listings going live in each territory. The ESRB descriptor for a GTA game is typically a long one, covering violence, blood, strong language, sexual content, drug use and gambling references. Australia’s board assigns R18+, which is where the series has sat since that category was introduced.

What the descriptors have historically included

  • Intense violence and blood
  • Strong sexual content and nudity
  • Strong language throughout
  • Use of drugs and alcohol
  • Simulated gambling

For parents buying this as a gift

The rating is not decorative. This is a game about organised crime with adult themes running through its whole structure, and the marketing so far has not softened that. Both consoles support parental controls that block M-rated content entirely at the account level, which is a more reliable approach than trying to supervise a 30-hour open world.

Does the rating affect anything else?

One practical thing already: the extended gameplay video Rockstar published in August is age-restricted on YouTube, which means it cannot be embedded and has to be watched signed in. We link to it directly from the trailers page for that reason.
