Why is GTA 6 taking so long?

Short answer

GTA 6 has been in development for over a decade because Rockstar is building its most ambitious game yet, and it was delayed twice, from 2025 to May 2026, then to November 19, 2026.

Rockstar has never said why GTA 6 is taking so long, but the delays are public record. The game was first promised for 2025 in Trailer 1, then pushed to May 26, 2026, and finally to November 19, 2026. That second delay, announced in April 2026, cited a need for more polish and adjustments based on playtesting. The gap between GTA V and VI is 13 years, and the development cycle has been longer than any previous entry.

What we know from job listings and leaks is that Rockstar rebuilt its engine and motion-capture pipeline for this game. The An Extended Look video from August 27, 2026, showed dense interiors, dynamic weather, and NPC routines that go beyond anything in GTA V. That scope costs time. The company also shut down modding tools for GTA Online in 2023 after buying Cfx.re, which suggests a focus on a unified, controlled online experience that may launch later.

There is no PC version announced, which shortens the console release window but adds no clarity on when a port might come. For comparison, GTA V reached PC 19 months after its console launch. Rockstar has not called the November date final, so another slip is possible, though unlikely given preorders opened June 25, 2026.
