Rockstar has not said a word about sunsetting Grand Theft Auto V or GTA Online when GTA 6 arrives. The company kept GTA Online running for years after the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions launched in March 2022, and it still receives regular weekly updates. Nothing about that cadence has changed since the GTA 6 trailers dropped.
Will GTA 5 stay online?
GTA Online is a separate revenue stream from the single-player campaign in GTA 6. The sequel ships as a solo experience, and no online mode for it is announced, though its release date is set. That makes it very unlikely Rockstar would kill its only live service game before a replacement exists.
Servers for older GTA titles offer a hint. GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 was shut down in December 2021, but that was over a year after the PS4 and Xbox One versions became the main platform. The active PS5 and PC editions are far too profitable to vanish on day one of a new release.
Historically, GTA 4’s multiplayer lasted years after GTA 5 launched. The practical answer: GTA 5 will keep running at least through 2027, probably longer, and its price won’t change. If Rockstar ever plans a shutdown, it would announce it months ahead with clear migration details, not quietly on release day.
